One correction to be made. Technically, a super soaker 4000 is a pneumatic device or could be considered as both.
May 15 - We are currently studying pressure. Specifically, pressurized fluid systems. This unit, students will be responsible for designing a device that uses pressurized fluid for a purpose.
Since January, we have been studying the outcomes in the Fluids cluster. Some concepts to review include: turbulent vs laminar flow, viscosity, how temperature affects viscosity, measurement of liquids and solids, mass vs weight, volume, flow rate. What makes a fluid a fluid?
Grade 8's are currently working on a product testing project. They have to select a product for which viscosity is important and then test several brands for viscosity and other factors. This is a significant portion of their design and inquiry grade. Projects are due on April 8.
Test for Science outcomes 10-17 is scheduled for Friday, January 25. Study guide pictured below.
Test on outcomes 8-1-10 to 17 will take place in January. I recommend frequent review starting now.
Students have access to additional resources in Google Classroom - 8 Science as well.
January 8 - Today, we used online resources to learn about arteries, veins, and capillaries. Then, we combined our information to create a venn diagram that compares and contrasts arteries, veins, and capillaries for outcome 8-1-12. Then, we review the parts of the heart and the path that blood follows through the heart. This information is required for outcome 8-1-11.
Pictured below are heart models made of straws and plasticine. Congratulations Cailee for winning the competition. !!!!
December 5 - Our next chunk of science with focus on the human body. Particularly the circulatory system and defense systems. It would be great to be able to assess understanding before the Christmas break. We'll see.
November 21 - We are going to have a science test soon. It will cover outcomes 1-10.
Pictures below are grade 8 students conducting Lab 1.3. Lab conduct evaluations were handed out yesterday. Please review them with your child, sign them, and send them back to school. Thanks.

Model beginnings for Water Systems (non-Band Science)
October 16 - Students wrote their quiz today. They will get them back tomorrow. Please review them with your student. Evidence suggests that several students need to review what it means to study until you master material or concepts. Students were given an extra hour to study in Mr. Martin's class. Most did not make effective use of the time. Please discuss performance on this test and help your child to realize the changes that they need to make to increase success. Please stress that this is something that they need to take control of.
We will be working with microscopes on Thursday afternoon.
October 9 - There will be a test to assess students' understanding of the cell parts and their functions as well as the differences between plant cells and animal cells. The test is scheduled for Oct 16.
September 25 - Students wrote their microscope quiz today. I also was able to score it and return it. Any students that did not score over 80% will need to study again tonight and rewrite tomorrow. The test will assess the same knowledge, but will not be the same test. I require at least 80% mastery before we use this expensive scientific equipment. I want students to understand the instructions when we conduct labs using the microscopes. Please go over the quizzes with your student, sign them, and return them to school as soon as possible. Thanks. Mrs. Shwaluk
September 21 - Practicing for Microscope quiz which is scheduled for Tuesday.
September 5 Our first unit of study will be Cells and Systems.
