May 15 - We are currently learning to add fractions. We will then move on to subtracting fractions. Then, we will return to geometry to finish off the year.
April 2, 2019 - Before the break, we wrapped up our study of adding and subtracting integers on a high note. Widespread mastery of these skills was evident from the final formal assessment. Way to go Grade 7. Yesterday, we began our focus on algebra. While we have studied some algebra already this year, this unit's focus will be on solving algebraic equations by isolating the variable. Key concepts will be order of operations, inverse operations (addition is inverse of subtraction), preservation of equality (keeping the equation balanced while you solve it.)
Students wrote their second provincial assessment yesterday and got them back today for review. The next attempt will be Friday, January 25. Students can sign out their assessment folders to study and improve. Mental Math next week will focus on multiplication.
Second attempt at the Provincial Assessment will occur on January 17. The mental math will focus on Subtraction.
Rewrite for operations with decimals will be at the end of the month.
Expectations for patterning competency on provincial math assessment. Continue a visual pattern, create a table of values, graph a linear pattern with all parts of a good quality graph, express a pattern with an algebraic expression, express a pattern in grade 7 level language. Also, use an expression to extend a pattern.
January 8 - Today we reviewed ordering decimals, ordering fractions, representing values, and mental math methods for addition in preparation for the provincial math assessment. Students will write their first assessment this Friday. We will review patterns tomorrow morning.
In the month of January, we will be working through the five competencies that comprise the Provincial Math Assessment. Each Thursday in January, we will have a math assessment. Students will then self assess to make improvements and develop skills further. By the end of January, all assessments will be completed and the scores will be compiled. Parents will receive a report by March. The five competencies are: ordering decimals, ordering fractions, representing numbers, patterns, and mental math. This month, we will focus specifically on mental math. We have studied all of the other competencies at the grade 7 level already this school year. Therefore, they will be reviewed.
December 10 - Students have been learning about operations with decimals. We have looked at each operation. Now, just practice, practice, practice. There will be a test next week on operations with decimals. We will begin working on Lesson 3.3, 3.4 and 3.5 tomorrow. There are videos on Khan Academy. Some links are included below.
Math test Friday, November 27. Students will need to convert among fractions, decimal and percent values. They will also need to order any of the representations. Sample questions are pictured below. No calculators allowed, but students can use their divisibility rules foldables and/or a multiplication chart.
Converting between fractions, decimals, and percent.
November 20 - We are currently working with ordering any representation of a value. For example, putting a set with fractions, decimals, and percent values in order from least to greatest.
Great sample answers from our last math test.
October 16 - First official math test tomorrow. This will focus on skills learned and practiced in lessons 1.3 to 1.6 in the textbook.
October 9 - We have been focusing on patterns in math. We have been learning how to represent patterns using tables of values, coordinates, pictures, graphs, and algebraic expressions. This is a key competency that will be assessed on the provincial math assessment in January and February. We are working in Chapter 1 of the textbook.
There will be a small assessment on Tuesday in which students will need to communicate their understanding of divisibility by zero on paper.
September 21 - Our next focus will be patterns. Please help to keep divisibility rules fresh. It is a terrible thing when students learn a skill and then don't practice it and lose it only to have to learn it again. Use the game links etc to help maintain mastery of skills. Have a great weekend.
September 20 - Interviews have been completed. Today, I gave each student their feedback and scoring sheet. I also instructed them on how to discuss them with their parents. They are aware of how each piece was created and need to be able to explain how they achieved the score that they did. Please sign anywhere on the page and return to school. We will store all formal assessments in a portfolio. Thanks.
September 18 - Interviews are underway. At the same time, students are doing and assignment in the textbook. All practice questions for Lesson 1.1 and 1.2 are due on Wednesday. If interviews are still taking place, there are lots of games to hone divisibility skills.
September 10 - We have now learned about the divisibility rules for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10. I have asked students to talk with you and with Siri to find out about dividing by 0 tonight. By the end of the week I would like to start interviewing students to assess their understanding of and use of the divisibility rules. They will practice through textbook questions, mock interviews, and games over the course of the week.
September 5, 2018- Excited for a new year of math. Our first focus will be divisibility rules. We will develop divisibility rules for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 0 and combinations of those. Generally, on this side of this web page, I will post updates and relevant links for current topics of study. On the left side, you will find useful links that will be used throughout the year.
