May 15, we are currently studying geometry. Our last unit was on everything related to circles. This week, we are focusing on area. Yesterday, we made interactive notes on the area of rectangles, squares, parallelograms, and triangles. We will have an area quiz shortly. Then, we will move on to surface area and volume.
April 2, 2019 - Grade 8's wrapped up their study of algebra before the break. Most students demonstrated very good understanding on the formal unit end assessment. Now, we are starting our study of the Pythagorean Theorem.
More helpful links related to Percent - January 18, 2019Percent increase and decreaseFinding the whole when you are given a percent value.Percent is such a valuable concept. AND it often involves challenge to reach understanding. Language is sooo important in this concept. Please work with your student to develop real life understanding and connection to the application of percent. Consumerism especially. Jan 18 We are working on 5.3 in the text. We have completed 5.1 and 5.2.
In January, we will focus on percent. Please take advantage of every opportunity you can to connect percent to real life. Ask your child to estimate the tax on a purchase. Can they figure out how much they would save if they have a 20% discount? What methods will they use to figure this out?
December 10 - Today, I gave a lesson on Order of Operations with Integers. Students worked on Lesson 2.5 practice questions. These need to be completed for Wednesday. There will be a test next week on operations with integers.
December 5 - We are working on operations with integers now. We have reviewed adding and subtracting. We have learned about and practiced questions on pictorial and symbolic multiplication of integers. This week, we have focussed on symbolic division of integers. All practice questions in 2.4 in the text are due by Friday at the latest. I will move on to order of operations with integers tomorrow with those who are done and prepared to move on. The math test on squares and square roots was handed back yesterday.
We will be having a test on Monday, November 26 on 8.N.1 and 8.N.2. Related questions in the text include 1.1 and 1.2. Students will need to understand squares and square roots as well as estimating square roots of non-perfect squares.October 16 - I returned all of the multiplying fractions tests today. Please go over them with your child, sign them, and then return them to school. We have started working on division of fractions. We have had lessons and practice on using fractions models to divide fractions. These models have included pattern blocks which can relate to fraction circles or fraction rectangles and also numberlines. Students were given an assignment today to work on these skills independently. Page 132 3-11 due tomorrow.
October 4 - We have had lessons on multiplication of whole numbers by fractions, fractions by fractions, and mixed numbers by wholes, fractions, or mixed numbers through pictorial representations or symbolic calculations. We have also practiced with questions in the textbook Lessons 3.1 to 3.4. Students were each given extra practice sheets with the answer key. There is also the mid-unit review to use as practice questions. There will be a test on multiplying fractions on Wednesday, October 10.
On a side note, only about half of students in grade 8 have been completing homework assignments. I randomly check for completion and record homework checks on powerschool. On homework entries, a green check means that the student had their homework done and there. September 25 - Today, we started learning about multiplication of fractions. We began with modelling whole number multiplied by fraction. Homework assignment due tomorrow is page 108-109 5-11 and 14, 15.
September 18 - Math test announced yesterday. Skills assessed will include adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers pictorially (with pictures) and symbolically (with numbers).
September 10 - We have been talking about greatest common factors, and least common multiples. We have been working with the addition of fractions using concrete materials, pictures, and mathematical symbols. Students have a few questions for homework tonight. Page 179-180 in a handout. Only select questions were assigned. Due Tuesday. I have added a few resource links that parents or students might find useful.
September 5 - Our first focus will be operations with fractions. We will begin by reviewing greatest common factors and tools that help to identify greatest common factors, including the divisibility rules and multiplication facts. Then, we will move on to adding and subtracting fractions. Followed by multiplying and dividing fractions. We will include mixed numbers and improper fractions with all operations.
